Imagine

It’s 1967. Jane picks up the phone and dials a number.
[ring ring, ring ring]
Hello, Mr Lennon? Hi, it’s Jane here from Capitol, how are you? Yeah, well thanks. Look, I’ve been listening to the songs you sent in and it sounds very much like you’ve been taking drugs, so I’m sorry to say we won’t be releasing this LP on our label...
Well, there’s I Am the Walrus...
The first two lines for a start, Mr Lennon! “I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together. See how they run like pigs from a gun, see how they fly. I'm crying” – that doesn’t make any sense at all!
Yes, I’m very aware of the money we’ll lose, Mr Lennon, but we fully believe that celebrities should be good role models, and we also care deeply for your well-being. If you seek medical help and commit to getting yourself healthy, we will talk again about releasing your music. Thank you for your time...
Okay, bye now.
You may say that I’m a dreamer, but I’m not the only one.

The photo’s from here.

  1. I say this all the time! I find it really hard to enjoy an artist if I know they are not a good role model, or I don't agree with their character! Grant says that I'm ridiculous, I can enjoy the music that Lennon wrote, whilst not endorsing his character as a wife beater or drug addict. Same as Woody Allen.. my mum refuses to watch his movies, and yet she owns every Beatles record...

I feel torn about this.... how can i choose which to take a stand on? is occasional drug use ok, but not habitual? what if I have a love affair with something (say cycling) and then only discover afterwards that it was bad (ala lance)? don't I just come across as moralistic and judgemental when I say that I don't watch roman polanski because I don't want to support a pedophile?
